Amid weather woes, India’s wheat production to fall 3%
NEW DELHI: The agriculture ministry on Thursday said that wheat output will shrink nearly 3% to 106 million tonnes this year — the first decline since 2014-15 — and blamed the unsual hot weather for the fall in production. Wheat production stood at a record 109 million tonnes in the 2020-21 crop year.
In February, the go nment projected record wheat output of over 111 million tonnes. A fortnight ago, food secretary Sudhanshu Pandey had told reporters that due to the early onset of summer, production was estimated to fall to 105 million tonnes. The last production dip was attributed to drought that year.
The lower output in India and some other countries, along with global supply crunch for grain in the wake of the Ukraine war, are seen as the key drivers for international wheat prices, which have soared in recent weeks, prompting the go nment to reverse its earlier push for exports and impose strict restrictions on shipments out of the country. The Centre has, however, maintained that there is adequate stock in the country, much higher than the buffer requirement to meet the domestic requirement.
After five record crops, heat wave threatens wheat output, export plans.
The decline in wheat production has not affected the overall foodgrain output which will still be an all-time high of 314 million tonnes, 1% higher than the 2020-21 crop year, the go nment said. What has helped is record production of other major crops such as paddy, maize and pulses in the current crop year (July-June cycle).
The ministry on Thursday released the third estimates of the output of foodgrains, oilseeds, sugarcane, cotton and jute for the 2021-22 crop year. The third estimates are usually quite close to the final figures which will be released later.
Land under cultivation is shrinking rapidly as hungry developers are grabbing more & more agricultural land.
Go nment of India recently raised subsidy for fertilisers by as much as 390%. Very convenient! This massive hike is paid by ordinary tax payers so that industrialists like Adani can get richer.
The estimation is wrong, in North India the production fall upto 10-20%.

India is paying heavily for lack of its people and po iticians respect for science. Science is language of God and nature. What data I am getting and seeing will blow minds away. If immedietely at war level heavy duty forestation and plantation is not done withgurrantee of green cover increment, India will col pse within 10 years only due to global warming and climate change. Almost mindless gvt appears on this very urgent matter. We have now seen total loss of Basant season to summer. March is ...
Last year the production was normal and the stocks were more than the need. And now the go nment has banned wheat export, that should now help the nation, even if the little shortfall is expected in production. Overall situation is not bad, we should feel happy.
We have only ourselves to balme as everyone is more concerned in purchasing the next big apartment or villa rather than other meaningful persuits.
There is need of more houses for those who are without any. The Govt should restrict people not to have more house than it is required for each person. But the Govt can not do this. Govt can not stop houses to be built up as this will hamper business in the country.
What AAP is doing in Punjab and Delhi? Providing ricity subsidy from taxpayers money but TATA power and your Ambani reliance taking full money from Delhi go nment. He won ion on promise to force ricity companies to reduce per unit price but instead he pays them full money! But you clap on that...
So what ?? We don’t care
Is it the go nment, or, the Indian people-- the Indians-- who are responsible?

it has already fallen as this year instead of 20 quintal per acre we got only 13 quintal as there was unexpected rainfall and suddenly coming of summer season, spring season was very short. Anyway you guys are very late to report and print it...
Now you know why Greta is appreciated Worldwide for her efforts on Climate Change.
coming 25 years india going to be like sahara desart,
Go nment should take suitable steps to ensure that wheat production increases next year.
This is an ominous sign and our food reserve and export will be hampered with loss to all concerned.
One cannot expect to break records every year. Last 4-5 years India had enough wheat cultivation that there was no space in godowns to keep the wheat grains but the msp of wheat grains eas raised every year. Use the surplus stock from buffer years to feed the hungry
good decision to temporarily stop wheat exports...indians first and foremost always...
India needs to take proactive approach towards climatic change on the International forums and in the country there is need to plant more trees and reduce emission of carbon.
Not required mandir is more important
the marginal fall will not have any impact on market prices. On the other hand farmers must be educated & provided with latest technologies so that they can enhance their output.
Market prices have already risen that's why Dankapatiji had to stop export of wheat.
We are entering in a phase of turmoil
